Radium Girls

A historical drama about the fight for justice of the Radium Girls

Set in the 1920’s it traces the story of Grace Fryer and the dial painters who fought their employer for compensation as they started dying from Radium poisoning. It’s a story of a fight for justice against corporate greed, the exploitation of lower-class female workers and the power of the media to create change

Kate Greenfelt for Waiting in the Wings Theatre Reviews

“The production was a success from the opening scene to the final curtain call. The director, Kathy Petrakis, captured the era’s essence with attention to detail, from the authentic period costumes to the simplistic set design. The black box stage and minimalist yet effective set, transported the audience to a time when industrial innovation came at a dire human cost.”

Jacky Barker for In the Cover reviews.

Directed by Kathy Petrakis, the production depicts the times when working-class safety standards were ignored and demonstrates the resilience of strong-willed women determined to sacrifice everything for the greater good of a better future….

Radium Girls is a bittersweet story inspired by the true events of women who sculpted better workplace conditions for all in the wake of their tragedy. Ten talented cast members play around 30 different characters, performing expertly. You will not regret seeing Lane Cove Theatre Company’s production of Radium Girls.”

Kimberlea Smith for the Fourth Wall

Despite the challenges of a show of this magnitude, under Petrakis’ direction the show is pacy and flows well. Petrakis has brought out the best in her cast, knowing when to let a moment hang and when to bring out the comedy in order to give the audience some breathing space from the heavier elements of the show. The set design is thoughtfully done – images are projected onto four screens to signify place, overcoming some of the limitations of the space.

Radium Girls is an engaging and beautifully acted show, another strong offering from Lane Cove Theatre Company, who have programmed a wonderful season this year. Playing until 25 August, it is a must-see for anyone who enjoys historical dramas.
